Welcome to the official chess club of MIT!
Congratulations to our team “Massachusetts Institute of Tactics” for placing 4th of 325 teams at the US Amateur Team East this weekend! The team finished 5/6, losing only the final match to a team with multiple titled players. All the team members had truly fantastic individual performances in a very difficult field (including 11 grandmasters!):
Harold Dondis, a pinnacle of Massachusetts chess, passed away last year at the age of 93. Besides his incredible contributions as president of MACA, longtime Boston Globe columnist, and founder of the US Chess Trust, Mr. Dondis experienced considerable success over the chessboard himself, including a victory over a then-young GM named Bobby Fischer.
Tech Chess has officially launched! Our first meeting drew over 20 players and plenty of smiles (as seen above) as we played friendly blitz matches and introduced the officers. Alex announced a number of initiatives we are aiming for this year, including the U.S. Amateur Team East and the Pan-Ams, as well as local matches against other schools and regular USCF-rated tournaments at MIT. We will likely have a tournament next month and our first match against Northeastern, also in October.
